Lukaotem Gud Santo are free to air, public music concerts combined into a 2 day festival in Luganville, Santo.
In 2011, a sister festival to the Fest’Napuan, the Lukaotem Gud Santo Festival, will be established in Vanuatu’s second city, Luganville. The Lukaotem Gud Santo Festival will take place in Unity Park on the 4th and 5th of November 2011.
Performers at the Festival will include custom musicians and dancers from Santo, local bands and international acts. The date, the weekend before the Fest’Napuan Festival in Port Vila, will enable some overseas musicians coming for Fest’Napuan to perform in Santo and Santo musicians attending Fest’Napuan to perform for their home audience. In addition, the Fest’Napuan Association will be sending popular Port Vila band Ruff Haos to participate in the Santo festival.
Getting the message to the public
In Vanuatu music plays an important role in custom, religion and enjoyment through artistic expression. To send a message to the community through a large-scale music festival in Luganville with an environmental theme will be a highly effective way of reaching a very large audience in a small amount of time. The festival name “Lukaotem Gud Santo” translates to “Look after Santo” and is designed to inspire the people of Santo to look after their island for the benefit of all who live there.
Success Through Community Support
We encourage the people and businesses of Santo, and especially Luganville, to recycle and dispose of their waste in a way that poses minimal impact to the environment
To work with local government and other appropriate organisations to create a recycling sorting centre which will provide employment for local Ni Vanuatu and will also benefit the tourism industry on which Vanuatu, including Santo, relies on as a main source of revenue.

Goals
Goals for this project include:
Improving environmental awareness and activities among the people of Santo
Organising an annual festival which will promote the Lukaotem Gud Santo vision;
Creating income-generating opportunities for local Ni Vanuatu;
Providing Santo’s musicians with training by international bands & the opportunity to play live at a large-scale event;
Uniting the many different cultures residing in Santo in a harmonious and respectful manner by presenting their custom dances & music at the festival.
Background
Luganville is located on the island of Espiritu Santo in the Sanma province of Vanuatu. It is the second largest town in Vanuatu, with a population - including outlying settlements - of approximately 22,000 and an annual growth rate of 2%. The population comprises a vast majority of indigenous Ni-Vanuatu, originally from many different islands, with small elements of Chinese, European and other Pacific Island descent.
Luganville is both an overseas port and one of Vanuatu's busiest local ports, especially as a HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transshipment"transshipment point for HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copra"copra, kava and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cacao_bean"cacao. The Segond Channel (the “canal”) between Luganville and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aore"Aore Island, provides the town with an excellent sheltered harbor. Luganville has changed considerably since Vanuatu gained its Independence from Great Britain and France in 1980, with the expansion of businesses and shops, and has great potential for further development.
Environmental issues - 2011
Waste management in Luganville has not kept up with the rapid population increase. There are very few bins and large amounts of rubbish can be seen throughout the town centre and in the sea. Rubbish is also washing up on neighboring Aore Island. The few bins that exist are small concrete bins that cannot be emptied properly by the garbage truck. The health of the community and the environment is seriously jeopardised by the massive amounts of litter. Developing industry in Santo, often close to residential areas, is also creating waste and pollution that endanger health and the environment. Action is desperately needed to educate the community and assist the municipality in correct waste disposal. This will also benefit the tourism industry, on which Santo relies on as a main source of revenue, by providing a safe, clean environment for travellers to visit.

Activities - 2011
Communicate with local government about a more satisfactory waste collection & disposal system for Luganville, including eventually a waste recycling centre
Assist ni-Vanuatu craftswomen to produce bags, baskets and other saleable items bearing the Lukaotem Gud Santo message
Request Luganville retail stores to sell locally made re-usable shopping bags & baskets instead of plastic
Visit kindergarten and primary schools in Luganville to educate children about correct rubbish disposal
Engage in discussions with local government about creating a recycling sorting centre in Santo
Organise the first Lukaotem Gud Santo Festival
Immediately before the festival, organise workshops for local musicians
The Festival
Festival location: Chiefs Nakamal, Luganville
Festival Date: 4 and 5 November 2011. This date, the weekend before the Fest’Napuan Festival in Port Vila, will enable some overseas musicians coming for Fest’Napuan to perform in Santo and Santo musicians attending Fest’Napuan to perform for their home audience.
Festival outline
Performers at the Festival will include custom musicians and dancers from Santo, local bands and international acts. All bands will be asked to communicate the LGSF vision. The festival will take place on an outdoor stage with banners on either side displaying the LGSF vision. There will be an environmental awarensss activities on the site. Stalls will be set up on the festival grounds to sell food and kava as well as items bearing the LGSF message. All food & drink will be served in biodegradable containers. Drink containers for water will be the only plastic allowed to be sold on site. The festival will be a family-friendly, drug- and alcohol-free event.
The festival will be promoted as widely as possible, with efforts including on-line promotion through tourism outlets in Vanuatu and overseas as well as local publicity through fliers and the media.

Entrance to the festival will be free. Funding will be required for:
